WHAT'S HAPPENING AT MOSD...
Valero Memphis Refinery Selects MOSD as a 2016 Grant Recipient!
November 30, 2016
The Valero Memphis Refinery has announced the 21 organizations in Memphis who will be receiving grant funds for 2016! Mr. Mark Skobel, Vice President and General Manager of Valero Memphis Refinery, highlighted the great work of several local organizations. The Awards Breakfast was held at the Guesthouse at Graceland on November 30th. Funds raised at the Valero Texas Open Golf Tournament were dispersed to area non-profit groups and Memphis Oral School for the Deaf received $25,000 in funding!
This grant will help fund the MOSD Preschool program which provides daily classroom instruction to deaf and hearing-impaired children ages 2-6 years old. The children in these classes participate in a conventional preschool curriculum, with "hands-on" experiences designed to promote the development of social, cognitive, perceptual, motor, and language skills. As is the case with all MOSD classes, particular attention is paid to the development of speech and auditory (listening) skills. Preschool children attend full day sessions, learning age-appropriate academic readiness skills. All children at MOSD receive the added benefit of individual and group therapy sessions for speech and aural habilitation (listening), to further enhance their development of SPEECH, LANGUAGE, AND LISTENING skills.
With specially-trained teachers and therapists on staff, in addition to audiological services on site, the cost to educate each child per year is $50,000. Tuition is based on a sliding fee scale. Funding helps with scholarship assistance so that MOSD can continue to provide deaf children from all socio-economic backgrounds with this oral approach to deaf education. MOSD has never turned a family away for the inability to pay thanks to community support.
Since 2006, Valero Memphis Refinery has donated more than $187,500 to support the children at Memphis Oral School for the Deaf.
We are so grateful for the continued support from Valero Memphis Refinery. Many Valero employees have visited MOSD and have seen for themselves how their support has made a measurable difference in the children and families that we serve. Thank you for making a lifelong, profound impact in these children lives by helping them learn to listen and talk.
