At the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf (MOSD), we know that language begins long before a child says their first word. It begins in everyday moments—through conversations, shared experiences, and the loving interactions between children and the people who care for them. That is why we are thrilled to partner with the Iris Collective on the Lullaby Project, made possible through the generous support of the Allen Family Foundation.
The Lullaby Project is an internationally recognized initiative that pairs professional musicians with families to create personalized lullabies for their children. Through guided conversations and collaborative songwriting, families share their stories, hopes, dreams, and experiences, transforming them into meaningful songs that can be treasured for years to come.
For families at MOSD, this project offers more than music. It creates opportunities for connection, communication, and language-rich interactions that support a child’s development while celebrating each family's unique journey.
A Song as Unique as Every Child
Every family has a story, and every child deserves to have that story celebrated.
Throughout the project, participating families work alongside professional musicians to craft original lullabies inspired by their children. The process encourages parents to reflect on special memories, milestones, and aspirations while creating something deeply personal and lasting.
These songs become more than melodies—they become tools for connection, comfort, and communication.
Supporting Language Through Meaningful Interaction
Research consistently shows that children develop language best through meaningful interactions with trusted adults. Singing, storytelling, and shared experiences naturally support listening, language, and literacy development.
For children with hearing loss, these moments are especially valuable. The Lullaby Project encourages families to engage with their children through music and language in ways that are personal, memorable, and joyful.
The result is a beautiful combination of creativity and purpose that aligns closely with MOSD’s mission of helping children with hearing loss develop spoken language and listening skills.
