Dear Parents,

October has been all about Fall, Pumpkins, Spiders, and Halloween! We love using hands-on activities as well as shared book reading to incorporate these themes into our therapy sessions, and we want to share ways for you to do the same at home. With so many fun things to talk about during the Fall, it is a perfect time to enhance and expand your child’s language!

Your child gains language through experiences that they share with you. Getting the language from your brain to your child’s brain is as easy as…conversation! That’s right! When you talk about the leaves changing colors, a squirrel gathering acorns, carving a jack-o-lantern, you are giving your child access to new vocabulary words and concepts. Talking with your child about what you are doing, seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling, hearing, is the best way to develop your child’s language.

Here is a resource for ways to share “fall-themed” conversation this season: https://hearingfirst.org/blog/2017/10/19/Fall-into-LSL-Learning

We hope you enjoy reading and talking about all things Fall with your child as much as we do!

Love,

The MOSD SLPs
